There’s a certain comfort that comes with knowing that there’s a consistent quality no matter where you travel. Earlier this year, I stayed at a Hilton Garden Inn while in Italy, and the layout was almost exactly the same. A shuttle will take you to the airport and pick you back up when you return. As a hotel for arriving the day before a cruise, it's decent. Besides a in-hotel restaurant, there is also a Panda Express, Burger King, McDonalds, Taco Bell, Starbucks, Outback Steakhouse, PDQ Chicken, and Chipotle. (The PDQ Chicken was drive-though only at the time of my visit). However, I walked fifteen minutes south at Oakwood Blvd and had a nice meal at the Moonlite Diner-not recommended for the embarkation day of the cruise as the meal was quite filling.

This is my first cruise since September, 2018, and a solo one at that. I prefer to arrive a day or so prior to the cruise to explore the area. I also prefer NOT to rent a car and instead utilize public transit. I also make it a point to avoid chain restaurants that I can easily visit at home, and especially target local restaurants. You can walk up and down 17th St. Plenty of places to eat, and real close to the port. As a place to stay to explore the local area, this has shortcomings.

This hotel is very secure, inviting and has a very friendly staff. We grabbed breakfast on the way out the next morning, and which was a quick and easy option thanks to made-to-order omelets, waffles and table service. The Vista was actually sailing out of Miami, but Fort Lauderdale is pretty close to there, making the Hilton Garden Inn a perfect option for me.
The hotel does have a free airport shuttle, but you are advised to call after you collect your luggage. For $20, they offer transportation from the hotel to the cruise terminal on a charter bus. When people look for a place to stay before their cruise, it’s usually because they are flying in from out of town. It’s far better to arrive a day early and spend a little extra money on a hotel than to risk a cancelled flight or travel delays causing you to miss the ship entirely.

But not everyone who decides on an overnight pre-cruise stay is flying in from far away. If you’re cruising out of Port Everglades, the hotel works with a shuttle service which will transfer you to the cruise pier for $10 per person. If you don’t want to take advantage of the shuttle service, you can easily catch an Uber or Lyft to the cruise port from the hotel. This will save you a little bit of money, especially if you have two or more people in your travel party.
